Rügen island – sunshine island!

To travel to Rügen, is like travelling with the sun in your luggage - the island is not only the largest German island (926 km²), but also gets the most hours of sunshine.
To be on Rügen means to become a spectator of the most fantastic light conditions and to have at least 63 km of fine sandy beaches and 574 km of coastline for bathing and walking at your disposal.

The island has a maximal length of 52 km (from north to south) and a maximal width of 41 km in the south. The coastline is characterised by numerous sea bays (Bodden or Wieken) as well as protruding peninsulas and promontories.
 
The door to the Isle of Rügen - Stralsund
The Hansiatic city of Stralsund is the door to the Isle of  Rügen. From here the island is connected with the mainland by the Rügen Dam and the new Strelasund Bridge, which run over the 2km wide Strelasund.

A district in its own right
The Isle of Rügen,together with the Isle of Hiddensee and a smaller island, form the administrative district (Landkreis) of Rügen, with Bergen auf Rügen as its main district town.
Further towns are Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz/Rügen. In addition are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin, Göhren, Baabe and Thiessow.
